Bullet-point news from That Friday Thing....

Modernising the army. What's all that about, then?

- The British army is to be redesigned to respond to the military
requirements of the 21st Century. A high-tech 'phone' system will
be introduced over which George Bush tells Tony Blair which
country he's got to invade next.

- Outdated 'industrial' warfare, such as the use of heavy tanks,
to dropped in favour of cheaper, more modern ways of attacking
the enemy, eg. jamming their inboxes with thousands of video
clips of David Brent dancing.

- Financial savings to be made with controversial new 'rifle
share' scheme.

...

Why all the fuss about the next Lord of the Rings film?

- The infantilising effect of Harry Potter means that we're now
incapable of watching a film that doesn't contain some form of
magic and/or goblins and elves.

- There are 1,000,000,000,000 computer generated characters to
get to know and love.

- The nostalgia and innocence of Lord of the Rings appeals to the
child in every adult who wouldn't mind fucking Liv Tyler.

Tough New Tactics by U.S. Tighten Grip on Iraq Towns

Tough New Tactics by U.S. Tighten Grip on Iraq Towns:

"In selective cases, American soldiers are demolishing buildings thought to be used by Iraqi attackers. They have begun imprisoning the relatives of suspected guerrillas, in hopes of pressing the insurgents to turn themselves in. "

So imprisoning *innocent* people in the hope that *suspected* guerillas will turn themselves in.

Imprisoning innocent people. Well, there goes the right to due process and a fair trial. Are they actually *trying* to breed terrorists? Probably.

What passes for enlightened thinking in Florida.....

"Sharon Huff is a lesbian parent. Her seven-year-old son Marcus
McLaurin was at school - the Parish School in Lafayette, Florida
- a month ago when a fellow pupil asked him something about his
family. Marcus informed his friend that he has two mothers,
because his biological mother is gay. 'Gay is when a girl likes
another girl,' he explained. A teacher who overheard the remark
took umbrage with the kid and told him that the word 'gay' is 'a
bad word'. Furthermore, the kid was forced to attend a
'behavioral clinic' where he was ordered to repeatedly write the
sentence, 'I will never use the word 'gay' in school again'. How
enlightened. Where most schools are trying to stop kids using the
word 'gay' as an insult, these primitive parish morons are
teaching their kids the exact opposite. This week the ACLU filed
a complaint and demanded an apology. But is an apology really
good enough?

We think not. At the very least, all of the teachers responsible
for punishing the boy for stating the simple fact that his mum is
gay should be beheaded. They are morons. Dead behind the eyes
backwoods morons. Defective human beings. Keeping them away from
children is absolutely vital, but not quite enough. They may
impregnate one another, and spawn, filling up the world with
filthy piss-eyed bigots. This cannot be allowed to happen. Murder
then, is the only solution. Murder by beheading. People should
only be forgiven after all, if they are truly repentant."

All from TFT.

UN condemns Afghan child killings

BBC NEWS | World | South Asia | UN condemns Afghan child killings:

"The UN has called for a swift inquiry into the 'profoundly distressing' deaths of nine children in a US bombing in Afghanistan. "

Well, if the terrorists were looking for more recuits, I can imagine a number of Afghan Fathers stepping up to the plate. Well done US military.

Sony forced to clip PSX's wings

BBC NEWS | Technology | Sony forced to clip PSX's wings:

"Sony's revamped PlayStation console, the PSX, has been stripped of some features so it can be rushed onto shop shelves in Japan in time for Christmas.
The entertainment system, on sale in Japan from 13 December, is a PS2, hard disk drive, DVD recorder and TV tuner.
But its recording speed has been cut and some audio and picture formats will not be supported, like MP3. "

Sony seemed to have dropped the idea of a broadband socket too. Seems there'll be another network adapter on the way soon.
